Publications of the Academic Research Department
ITC-SRA has been publishing an annual journal entitled, "Journal of Sangeet Research Academy" from 1980.
The journal has been given a new avatar since 2005 - Ninăd. The
journal includes papers presented in ITC-SRA's annual seminars as well as those
contributed by authors on different aspects of Hindustani Classical Music. This journal
today figures in the collection of the US Library of Congress.
The Sangeet Paridarshini Series of ITC-SRA takes care of the
publication of scholarly and rare manuscripts to fulfill the task of widespread
dissemination of musical scholarship. Besides these series, ITC
SRA's Academic Research Department also brings out other publications.
A significant wing of the Academic Research function is the Annual
Musicological Seminar, which has provided a unique platform for joint
deliberations by musicians, musicologists, researchers, teachers and
students, since the 1980's.
Papers presented at these
seminars are compiled for publication at a later date.
The Academic Research Department, responsible for
all the publications, also takes care of the Newsletter
Parampara.

Bharatiya Sangeet ka Itihas (Hindi)
This epochal work by Dr. Thakur Jaidev Singh is an invaluable guide for all scholars of
Indian music. It traces the lineage of Indian music to the Vedas and strings together the
overtones and undertones of music from the Ramayana, the Mahabharata, the Puranas, the
Astadhyai (Panini) and Buddhist-Jain literature.
(406 pages, Discounted price: INR 150)
Indian Music (English)
This book by Dr Thakur Jaideva Singh deals with the history of Indian music beginning from
the Indus Valley civilization. It sheds light on the music of the Vedic and epic ages as
well as that found in the Buddhist and Jain sources, Tamil sources, Natya Shastra,
Pouranic sources etc. It imparts information on the forms of musical instruments prevalent
during those times. The work also tries to ascertain whether Indian music was subjected to
foreign influences or not. The book contains detailed information about the authors,
composers and musicians of the 9th to 20th centuries, both Hindustani and Carnatic, which
will undoubtedly prove to be of immense interest and value to the researchers and students
of Indian music. The work will be of interest and benefit to both the student-scholar and
the layman.
(536 pages, Discounted price: INR 225).
Bharatiya Sangeet Shastra Ka Darshanparak Anusheelan (Hindi)
This book by Dr Vimla Musalgaonker is indispensable for both students and teachers of
Indian music. It explains the basic musical concepts underlying the Vedas, the Upanishads,
and the Vedangas. ( 399 pages, Discounted price: INR 200).
Music Makers of Bhatkhande College of Hindustani Music (English)
With the decline of the Nawabs in Lucknow, music and dance were confined to professional
women artistes. Art became taboo in respectable and cultured families. Pandit Bhatkande's
mission to restore the arts to their pristine status and worthiness of devout pursuit
inspired a movement to set up music colleges in Lucknow, Gwalior, Baroda and a number of
other places.
It is this succession of dedicated and selfless music makers whom Dr. Susheela Misra
vividly brings back to life in 20 nostalgic chapters in this book.

ITC SRA PUBLICATIONS :
Nur Ratnakar
ITC-SRA has completed a unique Research Project to compile a
bio-bibliographical survey of all accessible important writings on music, dance and
theatre, in Sanskrit, Arabic, Persian, Turkish, Deshi, Apabhramsa, Brajbhasha and Urdu.
The late Prof. Shahab Sarmadee of Aligarh conducted this survey, titled 'Nur-Ratnakar' in
two parts.
Prof. Shahab Sarmadee was the only eminent musicologist in India who was an authority on
Sanskrit as well as on the Persian and Arabic sources of the history of music. Volume I of
this survey covers the social and cultural evolution from Panini's time till 1399 A.D. It
treads on hitherto uncharted terrain in the history of Indian Classical music and also
critically examines well-known classics like the Natyashastra, Brihaddesi and
Sangeetratnakar.
Volume II of Nur-Ratnakar , which is in the pipline, covers the era from 1399 A.D. It will
provide an insight into the blossoming of folk music, the music of bhakti, the music of
the sufis, the origin and metamorphosis of Dhrupad, Khayal and the merger of the Indian
and the Turko-Persian forms of Dhrupad and Khayal.
(651 pages; Price : INR 795).

Amir Khusrau's Prose Writings on Music
Writings on Turco-Iranian and Indian music of his time lead to a rich
definition of music in medieval India, not only as a science but also as a fine art, in
its theoretical and performing aspects, with some information on its etiquette and its
aesthetic appreciation. (73 pages; Price: INR 150).

Khayal Gharanas
The basis of this book is a thousand hours of bandishes of various
artistes for the Ford Foundation Gharana Project. Analytical studies of various gharanas
supported with illustrations from ITC SRA archives as well as the Ford Foundation project
recordings in audio cassettes have been used as source material. (58 pages; Price: INR
